Hackers use negligent and careless computer administration as one gateway into computer systems but how often do they make the same mistakes on their own system.
The purpose of this phile is to provide people 'in the know' with the knowledge to prevent dangerous applescripts, trojan horses, virii, etc. from attacking your computer and if possible provide solutions (The Savior Scripts) to common problems. We will use a series of applescripts entitled "[stw] killer Scripts," which we released, as examples of the dangers you face.
P R E V E N T I O N
These are steps you can take to prevent damage to your Macintosh system.
1. These attacks will most likely come from fellow hackers, so whenever possible, don't piss any one off.
2. Never leave the 'Applescript' extension running on your Mac unless necessary.
3. If you must leave applescript running then disable the 'Finder Scripting Extension' whenever possible.
4. Always scan your downloads for virii using a program like 'Disinfectant' or "Virex."
5. Keep you virus protection software up to date. Since you are a hacker (or whatever else you would like to call yourself) you will be exposed to software that the rest of the populace will not see for a while. Unfortunately, this also means that you will be exposed to virii first. Therefore the virus protection software you are using may not be equipped to identify and/or disable a new virus.
6. Don't judge a file by it's icon. When downloading new files check their listing in the 'kind' section of the window. If you do not see this column, go to the 'Views' control panel and turn on the 'kind' listing.
7. If you suspect a file of anything, use the 'Find File' desk accessory to locate files that have been recently created and/or modified. Make sure that you know where each of them came from and/or why it was modified.
8. ALWAYS KEEP BACK-UPS!
9. If you use 'NCSA Telnet' make sure you turn off the ftp option in the preferences. In some versions 'NCSA Telnet' leaves the ftp option on with no passwords needed.This allows someone to steal your files or upload something nasty.
10. ALWAYS KEEP BACK-UPS! (This one is so important we included it twice; it also gives us a nice set of ten peices of advice)
C L E A N U P
1. It case you have been attacked using 'Apocalypse II' or 'Overpopulation' you can use the included scripts to help clean things up. Use 'Messiah' if you were the victim of 'Apocalypse II' and use 'Depopulation' if you were the victim of 'Overpopulation' (That was kinda onvious wasn't it?)
